Nocino Riserva Extra 40% 70cl Distilleria Caselli1860

£32.90£169.00

Traditional artisanal liqueur from Modena, aged for 3 years.

Description

Established in 1860 by Galdino Caselli, this is the first artisanal distillery to produce Nocino (the local, traditional walnut liqueur) for commercial purposes in the backroom of their drugstore in the center of Sassuolo. At the time the endeavour was ridiculed by the town’s inhabitants – as centenary traditions dictate, every household of the Modena area handcrafted its own balsamic vinegar and Nocino; who would they sell to?

Persistence paid off with the recognition of the Gold Medal at the International Expo of Rome 1924, all the way to the recent awards at International Spirit Challenge 2015.

The distillery is still family owned and now managed by Francesco Caselli; who is still using some of the founders’ original recipes (secretly guarded).

The flagship of Caselli1860 Nocino is obtained – according to the antique tradition – by putting unripe walnuts husks, harvested at the end of June, in a pure alcohol infusion with the addition of herbs and spices (whose type and doses are scrupulously kept secret). It is then aged for three years to further develop its complex flavours and nuances.

Serve neat or over ice.
